Description
Coconut is a nutrient rich oil that can be solid or liquid depending on the ambient environmental temperature. It has a unique composition which lends itself well to a variety of cosmetic applications. 

Cosmetic benefits
With anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, Coconut oil is an ideal carrier oil for acne prone, oily skin or for use in foot or scalp care products. It is emollient, moisturising and protective, making it a great ingredient in creams or body butters that keeping the skin smooth and soft. Its nourishing, cooling benefits help soothe and calm aggravated or sun damaged skin. When liquefied, it has good slip for massage applications as it remains on the skin for some time. This coating effect benefits the hair to protect against damage while hydrating and revitalising. It has a traditional use as a hair tonic and can be rubbed into the scalp to reduce flakiness and the ends to de-frizz.   

Formulation types
Coconut oil is a popular single ingredient for use around the house and on the skin. It can be used on its own to moisturise, remove makeup and improve hair health. It can be used in a variety of skincare products including creams, balms, massage oils, after sun treatments, hair applications, soaps and more. Useful for eye and neck creams, scalp, foot and body. 

% Use in formulation
Can be used at 100% or part of a formulation. To liquefy, heat jar gently in a warm water bath or rub single application in hands. Gently heating does not damage the oil.

None known. 

Recipes & applications

  • Natural Balm Base
  • To nourish a flaky scalp, add 6 drops of Cedarwood oil, Rosemary oil or Tea Tree oil to 1 tbsp of Coconut oil and massage into the scalp. Cover with a shower cap and leave for 15 minutes before washing out with gentle haircare products.
  • Use on its own, or add up to 1.5mL of Chamomile oil in 100mL Coconut oil, for a natural makeup remover or cleanser. Massage gently into the face, then wipe off with warm water and a facecloth.
  • Try 1 drop of Lavender oil in 10mL of Coconut oil for a simple after bath baby massage, to calm the body and mind for a peaceful nights sleep. This could also be used as a cradle cap treatment.
