In a world increasingly conscious of waste, reusing packaging is a smart and sustainable choice. But before repurposing containers like glass jars, plastic bottles, or metal tins, it's important to sterilise them to ensure they're safe and hygienic. The good news? You don’t need harsh chemicals—natural methods work just as well.
Hot Water SterilisationFor glass or metal containers, hot water is one of the simplest and most effective sterilisation methods. Wash the packaging thoroughly with soap and water first. Then, submerge the items in a large pot of boiling water for 10–15 minutes. Carefully remove them using tongs and place them upside down on a clean towel to air dry.
Vinegar SolutionWhite vinegar is a powerful natural disinfectant. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the inside and outside of the container thoroughly, let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This is particularly effective for plastic containers or lids that can’t withstand high heat.
Sunlight ExposureSunlight is a natural steriliser thanks to its UV rays. After cleaning your packaging, place it in direct sunlight for a few hours. This method works best as a follow-up after other cleaning techniques, adding an extra layer of natural disinfection.
Baking Soda ScrubFor containers with lingering odors or residue, sprinkle baking soda inside and scrub gently with a damp cloth or sponge. Rinse well and allow to dry completely before storing or reusing.
By using these natural sterilisation methods, you can safely give packaging a second life—reducing waste while keeping your home eco-friendly and chemical-free. It's a small step that makes a big difference!
