    Carrier oils for Anti-ageing

As we age our skin tends to become dryer, less resistant to the effects of the sun and weather, more fragile and loses elasticity… which presents as fine lines and wrinkles. Here at Sage we have nothing against ageing – we’re embracing all the beauty that comes with it. However, we are ALL about nourishing, caring for and protecting the skin, which is what anti-ageing skincare protocols are all about.

There are many natural skincare ingredients, rituals and products that can help nourish and protect the skin to fight these signs of ageing. One of these ingredient groups is Carrier oils, otherwise known as vegetable oils, which can be used either in a formulation or on their own as oil serums.

Carrier oils are full of nourishing fatty acids which soothe, protect and moisturise the skin. They include fat soluble vitamins such as A & E, which are essential nutrients for skin health.

    Camellia oil

With a fine texture that easily absorbs into the skin, Camellia oil is the perfect anti-ageing oil. Extracted from the seeds, it has been used for centuries in Asian countries to maintain a youthful complexion. It moisturises, protects and enhances cellular regeneration, improving the appearance of fine lines. It not only nourishes dry and sensitive skin, but provides a non-greasy feel for those on the oilier side. Use alone as an oil serum, or incorporate into creams and lotions.

    Avocado oil

This rich and nutrient packed oil is perfect for those who love the deep nourishing feel of a good  face oil. Rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids, Avocado penetrates deeply into the epidermal layer, making it the perfect carrier for your other active ingredients. It has a rejuvenating action which lends itself nicely to formulations for dry, damaged and fragile skin. It is said to help with age related discolouration, brighten a dull complexion and can smooth lumps and bumps. Combine with a lighter weight oil such as Camellia or Sunflower, or on its own for a hit of hydration.

    Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is one of our favourite carriers! Its unique composition makes for a balancing oil that is suitable for all skin types. Despite having the texture of a vegetable oil, and being used in a similar way, Jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax. It has a fatty acid profile that is akin to skin sebum meaning it can hydrate dry skin but also reduce oiliness when needed.

It is the perfect ingredient for those with combination skin. Jojoba is used extensively in anti-ageing skincare as it is easily absorbed and improves skin texture - making it soft and supple. Use Jojoba oil directly on the skin as an intensive treatment for fine lines and wrinkles.

    Apricot oil

Apricot is a lovely light carrier oil which absorbs readily into the skin. It is an ideal choice for those with mature or fragile skin and is particularly useful in delicate areas such as around the eyes, neck and décolletage. It is both emollient and occlusive, minimising water loss, which leads to a nourished and revitalised complexion. In a formulation, Apricot can be combined with heavier oils to lighten the texture, making for a more easily absorbed product. Use in creams, lotions and serums or directly on desired areas.

Carrier oils are an important component of natural skincare. Remember, each oil has a unique composition, resulting in a different texture and rate of absorption. If you’re yet to find a carrier that suits your skin - keep trying! Make carrier oils as a part of your skincare regime today.
